Bergmanhoff | Schiava | Südtirol / Alto Adige, Italy | 2022
Nestled in the enchanting Alto Adige wine region, the historic Bergmannhof has been the pride of the Pichler family since 1851, carrying a legacy rooted in winemaking. Led by Johannes Pichler, the third generation, the family has passionately crafted wines from their own vines for over four decades.
Situated in Unterrain, Eppan, just a stone's throw from the Austrian border, Bergmannhof stands at 270 meters above the Etsch River valley. The unique location means that the people of this region, so close to Austria, actually speak Italian. The "Huberfeld" vineyard, a historic gem in St. Pauls, boasts varieties like Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Merlot, and Cabernet franc, thriving in sandy, clayey, limestone gravel soils.
The Pichler family, dedicated to treating nature with profound respect, employs hands-on techniques to ensure vine growth and vineyard harmony. Handpicked grapes undergo a meticulous selection process, transforming into authentic wines in the ancient cellars. Aged mostly in wooden barrels, these wines maintain a close connection with yeast, keeping sulfites to a minimum, and steering clear of unnecessary fining or filtration. Bergmannhof's wines encapsulate tradition, nature's essence, and the unique linguistic blend of Italian so close to the Austrian border.
