Vins de la Madone | "Dacite," Gamay | Loire Valley, France | 2023
The Côtes du Forez is a hidden gem of magnificent terroir tucked near the source of the Loire River. There are less than 170 hectares planted compared to the region's rich history when there were ~5,000 hectares planted aside mansions in the pre-phylloxera era. The region is now making a comeback under the care of vignerons like Gilles Bonnefoy.
Gilles recognized the potential of the volcanic and granite soils, diving into organic farming in 2001 and embracing biodynamics in 2009. The Gamay grape thrives here, delivering vibrant and delicious reds that mimic the energy of Cru Beaujolais (at a fraction of the price) with a cool, rocky freshness and savory nuance.
La Madone, the largest of Bonnefoy's vineyards, sits on crazy steep hills of volcanic and granite soils. Hand-harvested and managed entirely by hand, this vineyard's wine is a testament to Bonnefoy's dedication.
